Do Something Different

Today we’re going to be looking at doing something different. We’ll be exploring how to make changes to your life that will make you happier and more fulfilled.

If you’re breathing at this moment in time then congratulations, you’re still alive and living on planet earth. The downside though is that you will have hardship in this life – because we all do.

Life’s challenges come in many different forms. It may be through your work or the lack of it, your school or college, your friends, your church, your family, your partner or your own personal circumstances – such as illness, addiction or disability.

You may have said to yourself, “Life’s too difficult. I’ll keep myself to myself, that way I won’t get hurt and I’ll be able to cope.”

Some of these situations are not possible to change. At least, it may seem that way right now. Some of them are of our own doing – we brought them on ourselves, or at least we perpetuate the situation by our willing involvement or by our inaction. Some of them will harm us, others are an opportunity from God for our growth and development.

If we’re going to be able to overcome life’s challenges we need to do something different because what we’ve tried running away and it’s not worked.

We must do something different if we are to be something different.

This isn’t about getting more will-power or trying harder. The answer isn’t going to come from within us. We need reviving by something or someone else.

Ultimately only God can bring us lasting change in our lives. But in order for change to happen we must first learn how to cooperate with God.

What do I mean by cooperate with God? Well, put simply, a lot of time we don’t. When difficult situations arise we do our best to get out of them. If we can’t get out of them, we tell everyone how difficult our life is in attempt to make ourselves feel better. We’ll turn to other things to distract us from the pain; like drink, drugs, overeating, gaming, gambling, web surfing, binge watching and so on. Life doesn’t get better, it stays the same or gets worse.

If we do manage to escape one difficulty another appears around the corner to take its place; the cycle repeats.

Make the Change

We start by accept that God’s hand is at work in our lives – in both the good days and the bad. Accepting what cannot humanly be changed. And accepting God’s help in the unchangeable situation.

“So, how do we put this into action?”, I hear you ask. “What does that look like?”

Spend time with God

Make time to be in his presence. To rest. To invite him to be with you. To talk with his about the challenges you face and hand things over to him. To let him minister to you by his Holy Spirit. To listen to his guidance and reflect on what he is asking of you.

Spend time with God’s People

God’s purpose was to work through each of us. To minister to one another. Life isn’t a solo performance. Make time to be with others. To talk about what challenges us. To pray for one another. To be encouraged and to encourage each other. To ask for advice and offer support to others.

Start being obedient, rather than fighting God

That means putting into practise what you hear. God plan is perfect. It’s the shortest, most painless route to our happiness. We need to start doing what he’s asking us. That often looks like caring for others, putting others first, trusting that he’ll take care of us, not complaining.

We must do something different, something new, if we are to be different. We need to start cooperating with God and allow him to do his work of change in our lives.

Start the change today by making time for God, time for others and make a commitment in your heart to trust that God knows what he’s doing.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be happy in this life, And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen
